How stuck are you in a negative emotional state in your relationship? How is your startup? What is the overall positive-to-negative ratio in your relationship interactions? How are your emotions paired? If you like data and want to know the answers to these questions, the Gottman Love Lab is for you.
The Gottman Love Lab on Gottman Connect is now available in-office or via telehealth through Happy Couples Healthy Communities. This ground-breaking assessment tool replicates the research methodology of Dr. John Gottman in his famous “Love Lab” in Seattle and brings it to you.
In this experience, you will complete a clinical questionnaire followed by a video evaluation and rating process to receive a scientific “X-ray” into your relationship. This will provide your therapist and you with valuable clinical information by pinpointing specific strengths and challenges in your relationship, while also suggesting valuable, research-based recommendations for therapy.
The first part of this experience is the Enhanced Gottman Relationship Checkup. This completely confidential and fully HIPAA-compliant clinical tool consists of 337 questions about friendship, intimacy, how well you know your partner, how you manage emotions and conflict, how you share your values and goals, and what gives meaning to your lives. There are additional questions about parenting, housework, finances, trust, and individual areas of concern.
The second part of this experience is the recording of two eleven-minute videos: the “Events” conversation, followed by the “Conflict” conversation. Once the videos are recorded, each partner will log in to their individual account and rate how they felt about their interaction at the time of the recording using the “Rating Dial.” Together with an analysis of the videos, this information will be used to track and rate your interactions.
The results of the Enhanced Gottman Relationship Checkup, the analysis of the videos and the results of the “Rating Dial,” and the completion of a checklist by your therapist will all be combined to produce a “Clinician’s Report” and a “Couple’s Report.” Your therapist will share and review the “Couple’s Report” with you in the feedback session.
You can feel confident in your results. Drs. John and Julie Gottman created this research-based assessment in collaboration with the Gottman Institute and Affective Software to help couples develop a personalized treatment plan with their therapist. Dr. John Gottman is a clinical psychologist who has completed more than 40 years of research on couple relationships and is recognized as one of the top 10 most influential therapists of the last quarter century. Dr. Julie Gottman is a highly respected clinical psychologist who is sought internationally by the media and clinical organizations as an expert advisor on relationships. Together, they have dedicated their lives to helping couples, and the Gottman Love Lab is the result of this life work.
